Change of Address FAQs

Who do I need to notify when I change my address?

Start with USPS mail forwarding, then your employer, banks and credit cards, insurance providers, the DMV, the IRS, and voter registration. After that: utilities, internet, subscriptions, healthcare providers, and online shopping accounts. Our interactive checklist covers all of them in order.

How do I change my address with USPS?

Go to usps.com and file an official change of address (or visit a post office). Online filing charges a small identity-verification fee to a card matching your name. Forwarding starts within about 3 business days and standard forwarding lasts 12 months for first-class mail.

When should I start changing my address?

About two weeks before your move. File USPS forwarding first with your move date as the start date, then work through employer, banks, government, and utilities so services switch over the day you arrive.

How long do I have to update my driver's license after moving in NY?

New York State requires you to report an address change to the DMV within 10 days of moving. You can do it online through your NY DMV account.
