Moving on the 1st of the Month in NYC: Survival Guide

Most NYC leases start on the 1st — which makes the last and first days of every month the busiest moving days in the city. If your lease forces you into a 1st-of-the-month move, here's how to survive it. If it doesn't, here's why you should dodge it.

Why the 1st is chaos

  • Every mover is booked — the best crews sell out 2–3 weeks ahead for the 1st.
  • Freight elevators are double-booked — buildings run back-to-back move windows all day.
  • Curb space disappears — three moving trucks per block, all competing for the same loading zone.
  • Overlap gaps — old lease ends the 31st at noon, new one starts the 1st at 3pm, and your stuff needs somewhere to be in between.

If you must move on the 1st

  1. Book movers 3+ weeks out — and reserve the freight elevator the same day (see our elevator guide).
  2. Take the earliest slot of the day. Delays cascade — the 7am move happens on time; the 2pm move inherits everyone else's overruns.
  3. Get the COI approved the week before — management offices are swamped on the 30th/31st.
  4. Confirm both buildings' rules — some don't allow two moves in the same elevator window.
  5. Pack completely the night before. On the 1st there's no schedule slack for finishing boxes while the crew waits.

The lease-gap problem

If your move-out and move-in don't line up, you have three options: negotiate a day of overlap with a landlord (worth asking — often cheap), book overnight truck holding, or short-term storage. Mention the gap when you get your quote so it's planned, not discovered at 5pm with a loaded truck.

If you can avoid the 1st — do

Mid-month, mid-week moves get better crew availability, easier elevator slots, and calmer streets. Even shifting to the 3rd or 4th beats the 1st. Landlords often flex a lease start a few days if you ask before signing.

FAQs

Why is moving on the 1st of the month so hard in NYC?

Most NYC leases start on the 1st, so movers, freight elevators, and curb space are all at maximum demand on the last and first days of each month. The best crews book out 2–3 weeks ahead for those dates.

How far in advance should I book movers for a 1st-of-the-month move?

At least 3 weeks, and reserve your building's freight elevator window the same day. For mid-month moves, 2–3 days notice is often enough.

What if my old lease ends before my new one starts?

Ask a landlord for a day of overlap, or arrange overnight truck holding or short-term storage. Mention the gap when getting quotes so it's built into the plan and price.

What's the cheapest day to move in NYC?

Mid-month, mid-week dates (roughly the 5th–25th, Tuesday–Thursday) have the best availability and pricing. The 1st, the 31st, and month-end weekends are peak demand.
